On 29 July 2024, Gridio will introduce a paid model for smart charging - with a two week discounted and lifetime offer available for existing customers before that. In the below blog our CEO explains the new approach and why we are making the shift.

Since 2021, Gridio has been dedicated to providing you with smart charging services at no cost. We were the first to roll out smart charging for Volkswagens, Škodas as well as introducing solar + EV integration as pioneers. Our mission has always been to help you save money by shifting your electric vehicle (EV) charging to cheaper and cleaner hours, ultimately benefiting the grid and power market operators. This vision is built on the belief that by working together, we will create a more sustainable future for everyone.
As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of the electricity market, we recognize that we must adapt to ensure we can continue delivering the high-quality service you deserve. Today, we are excited to announce a new chapter for Gridio, one that will enable us to grow and enhance our services even further.
Starting July 29, Gridio will transition to a subscription-based model. We will offer our smart charging service for a small fee (exact rates visible in your app based on currency) which is about 20-30% of the average annual savings we generate for you by shifting charging away from peak hours. This change will help us maintain and improve our service, ensuring that you continue to benefit from the most efficient and cost-effective charging solutions.
Our goal has always been to create a win-win situation for EV drivers, the grid, and power market operators. Unfortunately, the electricity markets have not yet evolved to a point where EV ownerss can generate money at scale by helping the gird. This means that while we continue to work towards a future where EV charging can be free or even profitable, we need to ensure that we can sustain our operations and continue innovating.
By shifting to a subscription model, we are taking a crucial step towards achieving our long-term vision. Your subscription will not only support the continued development of our smart charging technology but also enable us to work with other market players to unlock the potential of EV charging on a larger scale.
Strategically, to continue the mission to enable you to earn money with your EV smart charging, we are working with energy utilities and soon with grid companies to monetize the flexibility of your charging and, of course, share the benefits. If bi-directional charging is properly enabled by car companies, rather than just in their marketing, then we see that as a key way to actually make EVs proper power plants to the society—not just virtual ones.
If you choose not to subscribe, your vehicle will remain connected, and you will still have access to all historical data. However, smart charging will be disabled. We hope you will see the value in subscribing and continue to support our mission.

Why is Gridio starting to charge for its services? We are transitioning to a subscription model to ensure we can continue providing high-quality smart charging services and to support the development of future innovations.
How much will the subscription cost? Please see the Subscription page in the Gridio app menu for the price in your local currency, which provides uninterrupted access to our services without any monthly fees.
What if I don't want to subscribe? You can choose to continue using Gridio without a subscription, but smart charging features will be disabled. We hope you will see the value in subscribing and joining us in our mission to create a more sustainable future.
How can I subscribe? You can subscribe through our app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Detailed instructions will be provided in the app.
How can I get an invoice? The payments, invoices, refunds are all managed by Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Please check your Apple / Google account for invoice and any further payment information.
Will there be any changes to the service? Our commitment to providing top-notch smart charging services remains unchanged. The subscription model will help us maintain and improve our services for all users.
I use Gridio with two cars in the family, do I need two Gridio accounts? Gridio currently supports adding multiple cars to a single Gridio account as part of the standard subscription. However, they have to be from separate brands. If you for example have two Teslas, then please get in touch with us, as we do not have a solution readily available.
I use two Gridio accounts in the family to connect to a single car, what should I do? Going forwad, we recommend only using a single Gridio account per vehicle - so you should just pick one account and subcribe that one (feel free to log in to two phones with a single phone number, we don't mind).
